Exclusive Pumping: It's Still Breastfeeding
When people picture breastfeeding, they often imagine a baby feeding directly at the breast. But for many families, breastfeeding looks different. And that's okay.
Exclusive pumping means expressing all of your baby's milk and feeding it by bottle instead of feeding directly at the breast. It can be an incredible way to give your baby breast milk when feeding at the breast isn't possible, isn't working, or simply isn't the right fit for your family.
Why families choose or need to exclusively pump
There are many reasons this becomes the path, including:
- Baby has difficulty latching or transferring milk effectively
- Premature or medically unwell babies who aren't yet able to breastfeed
- Tongue tie or oral function challenges affecting feeding
- Separation after birth due to medical reasons
- Low milk transfer despite good milk supply
- Breast refusal, or a baby who prefers the bottle
- Maternal nipple pain, trauma, or breast surgery
- Returning to work or needing greater flexibility
- Personal preference or mental wellbeing
- Adoptive breastfeeding, induced lactation, or relactation journeys
Exclusive pumping is breastfeeding
It's worth saying plainly: providing your own milk to your baby, regardless of how it reaches them, is still breastfeeding. If you've felt like it "doesn't count" because there's a bottle involved, it counts. Fully.
Is it more work?
It can be an adjustment. Expressing, bottle feeding, washing pump parts and bottles, and planning your day around sessions takes commitment, organisation, and planning. But it's often no more time consuming than direct breastfeeding, it just looks different on the clock.
If your supply is well established, you'll often have more flexibility with your pumping routine and can collect milk outside of feeding times. Plenty of mums multitask and express while feeding their baby, or while their baby sleeps nearby.
Making exclusive pumping easier
A few things genuinely make the biggest difference:
- Use a high-quality double electric breast pump where possible
- Get your flange size right (this affects comfort, efficiency and output more than almost anything else)
- Pump frequently in the early weeks, matching your baby's feeding pattern, typically 8 to 10 times in 24 hours if you're establishing a full milk supply
- Replace pump parts regularly as they wear out
- Consider hands-free pumping once supply is established, it makes daily life noticeably easier
- Reach out for support the moment your supply shifts or your routine becomes hard to maintain
There's no one "right" way
Every family's circumstances are different, and feeding plans often change over time. Some parents exclusively pump for weeks, others for months, and some move between pumping and breastfeeding as things evolve. None of these paths needs justifying.
Whatever your journey looks like, you deserve support without judgement.
If you're navigating pumping, you don't have to work it out alone
Flange fit, pump routines, supply maintenance, and knowing when something needs troubleshooting versus when it's just normal, it's a lot to hold on your own, especially in those early sleep-deprived weeks.
Inside the Best Start Breastfeeding Membership, the Pumping module walks you through exactly this: choosing the right pump and flange size for your body, building a routine that protects your supply, and knowing what's normal versus what needs a closer look. You'll also have weekly group calls to bring your specific questions to, and a community of mums who understand exactly what exclusive pumping involves, because many of them are doing it too.
You get 12 months of access for one payment of $299, or $70/month if you'd rather spread it out.
